Documenting My Socks

When I was in middle school a friend of mine gave me a pair of socks for Christmas and I still wear them to this day. They go up to the knee, probably made of a mix of natural fibers and plastic judging by the way they stretch. The top of the sock (I don't know sock terminology; I want to call it the rim) and the toe end are both bright neon pink, and the heel is a bright near-cyan blue. The body of it is horizontal black and white stripes, on top of which are silhouettes of unicorns with wings, as well as heart and star shapes, colored with stripes of many neon hues. These socks are probably the most bright and colorful piece of clothing I have, and they make me feel very happy when I see them.

As time goes on, I find myself having to repair these socks over and over again. I've realized now that there is going to come a time when even with repairs, my socks will no longer be wearable, and it will probably be a very long time before I find anything quite like them again. I want to wear them as often as I can, but I also want to preserve their memory. I feel like the design of them is very special. They are a piece of art to me, aside from their sentimental value. Look at those colors! And the unicorns of course remind me so much of my tween years and the magical rainbow fanstasy trends of that time period.

My purpose for this page will be a) to serve as a testimony to the existence of the socks themselves, and b) to chronicle my attempts to preserve their memory in other ways.

Here's a picture of the socks as they are today. Both have holes and parts where the thread is thin, so they're out of commission at the moment. You can see one of them is getting darned right now. The other is just waiting their turn for maintenance, and then they will both be on my feet AGAIN!

The socks are getting worn out again, and I've decided to put them away for the time being. Maybe one day when I learn to sew with knitted fabrics, I can incorporate them into a nice sweater.
